Advanced Placement (AP) Exam

Description: Identified courses that prepare high school students to take advanced placement tests, allowing advanced placement and/or credit at the post-secondary level

Location: Student attends high school Advanced Placement class at the high school campus with their peers

Instructors: High school teacher possesses credentials to teach AP class

Do credits transfer to a college or university? Each post-secondary college and university has its own policy for the acceptance of AP credits

Costs: Test fee may apply

Class selection: Limited to what the high school offers

College in the High School

Description: A program that allows qualified high school students to take college-level courses within their school and earn both high school and college credit.

Do credits transfer to a college or university?聽Since all classes in the program are on the 鈥淎AS Direct Transfer A鈥 list, Washington state four-year public colleges will accept the credits

Class selection: Limited to what the high school offers through the program

Running Start

Description: A program that allows qualified high school juniors and seniors to attend college classes and earn both high school and college credit

Location: Student attends class on college campus and becomes a college student, with no parent communication regarding grades, attendance, etc.

Instructors: College class taught by college instructor

Do credits transfer to a college or university? Any class appearing on the 鈥淎AS Direct Transfer A鈥 list will be accepted by all Washington state four-year public colleges

Costs: Tuition waived, student pays lab fees, textbooks and transportation

Class selection: Large variety of class options

Tech Prep

Description: A program enabling students to remain in high school and begin a vocational/technical program that leads to a two-year degree or certificate program.

Location: Student attends class at the high school campus with their peers

Instructors: High school teacher possesses credentials to teach Tech Prep class

Do credits transfer to a college or university? 15 credits can be transferred. Students should be aware of future transfer issues with the post-secondary college/university of their choice and any additional financial aid impacts

Class selection: Limited to what the high school offers
